چکیده

Figure 2. A chest x-ray showing correct endotra-cheal tube placement and no acute lung pathology. DESCRIPTION A 28-year-old woman underwent fiberoptic intubation for incision and drainage of joint space infection of a temporomandibular joint arthroplasty performed 10 days prior. The airway was prepared with 4 sprays of topical benzocaine spray and 3% lidocaine ointment. After 30 minutes, the peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO 2) dropped gradually to 85% and the patient's lips and face showed evidence of cyanosis (Fig 1). The finding from a chest x-ray film was negative for any acute lung pathology and the endotracheal tube was noted to be above the carina (Fig 2).

Benzocaine-induced methemoglobinemia.

A case is reported in which a patient developed methemoglobinemia-induced cyanosis while under general anesthesia during surgery for multiple fascial space infections. The cause of methemoglobinemia was 20% benzocaine spray used for local anesthesia before intubation. Acutely developing methemoglobinemia is infrequently encountered in clinical practice. When confronted with cyanosis in the abse...

Benzocaine-induced methaemoglobinaemia: a case study.

Benzocaine is a widely used topical anaesthetic and has been reported to cause toxic methaemoglobinaemia in otherwise healthy individuals with no predisposing risk factors. This article reports on a rare case of benzocaine-induced methaemoglobinaemia following adenotonsillectomy in a 5-year-old girl. Topical benzocaine was applied orally for the relief of postoperative wound pain on the eighth ...

Reported adverse event cases of methemoglobinemia associated with benzocaine products.

BACKGROUND Methemoglobinemia (MHb) is characterized by abnormal levels of oxidized hemoglobin that cannot bind and transport oxygen. When induced by benzocaine anesthetic spray and other chemicals, it can result in cyanosis and life-threatening complications. METHODS From 818 439 adverse event reports received by the US Food and Drug Administration from November 1997 through March 2002, we ex...

Methemoglobinemia: an unusual cause of postoperative cyanosis.

Methemoglobinemia, although rare, must be considered in surgical patients presenting with acute respiratory distress and cyanosis. We report two cases of methemoglobinemia in patients undergoing aortic reconstruction. The first patient developed methemoglobinemia while on a nitroglycerin infusion, and the second after receiving benzocaine spray before intubation. Both patients were treated with...

Benzocaine and lidocaine induced methemoglobinemia after bronchoscopy: a case report

INTRODUCTION Methemoglobinemia is a rare cause of hypoxemia, characterized by abnormal levels of oxidized hemoglobin that cannot bind to and transport oxygen. CASE PRESENTATION A 62-year-old male underwent bronchoscopy where lidocaine oral solution and Hurricaine spray (20% benzocaine) were used. He developed central cyanosis and his oxygen saturation was 85% via pulse oximetry. An arterial b...
